Salim and Mara Brock Akil Leave BET

While BET is making a late-night video comeback with BET Uncut, the network is also losing a few quality content creators.

On the heels of the final season and episode of The Game, married production duo, Salim and Mara Brock Akil are saying their farewells to the network and setting up shop with Warner Brothers Television.

Akil Productions has been a staple in the BET family, bringing scripted series and breathing life back into a platform that was slowly, but surely dwindling in the fan base arena.

With Mara’s smart and relatable writing hand and Salim’s directorial eye, their visions have marked a sustainable imprint in entertainment and content curation.

Not only did Mara create a gem with The Game, but her imagination was also behind the ultimate bestie series, Girlfriends, along with Being Mary Jane, which reignited the flame of Gabrielle Union’s career. In addition to television, Akil productions was also behind films, Sparkle and Jumping The Broom.

The move to Warner Bros. Television will engage the production team with more flexibility and an opportunity to diversify their content and projects.

As for Brock Akil’s hand in Being Mary Jane, she will no longer be the show-runner, but will now become the “executive consultant.”

We can imagine that this is an exciting time for the Akil clan. A big congrats goes out to Salim and Mara!
