Russell Simmons has been a curator of and for the culture for decades. It looks like the mogul is continuing that tradition.
Hip-hop industry veteran Russell Simmons’ company All Def Digital has signed a multi-project content partnership with Che Pope, longtime Kanye West affiliate and chief operating officer at West’s G.O.O.D. Music label.
Pope will be collaborating on two film projects, Simmons shared with The Hollywood Reporter:
“We have a project called My Block, where we bring artists back to their home towns, back to the street where they were born. And a project called Robber Radio, telling the untold story of the role of pirate radio in hip-hop.”
After becoming a mentor to many of the top industry players in the music business, it’s great to see that the mogul is continuing his legacy of upholding urban culture. It’s a cause that he takes to heart, as he shared in this recent interview with EBONY.com:
When Martin [Lawrence], Jamie [Foxx], Cedric [the Entertainer], Bernie Mac, Chris Tucker, and Dave Chappelle came out of Def Comedy Jam, it was a moment when Hollywood looked to us to get them our stars. Now we’re in this White space. But we’re also building careers, and we’re watching that. You need Black [people] sometimes to understand things about Black culture. There’s something about the authenticity that Hollywood is missing when it comes to urban culture. Very seldom do we get that opportunity to do it all ourselves…and that’s what I’m here to do.”
