A handful of artists have honored Trayvon Martin with their music, but when R&B singer Lester Chambers did it, one fan didn’t appreciate the gesture.
Lester Chambers – a member of the Chambers Brothers, best known for their 1968 hit “Time Has Come Today” – performed Saturday at the Hayward Russell City Blues Festival in Hayward, California. When he dedicated Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready” to the slain Florida teen, 43-year-old Dinalynn Andrews Potter yelled “it’s all your fault” before leaping on the stage and shoving Chambers to the ground, according to AP.
“She must have been an acrobat,” said Lola Chambers, Lester Chambers’ wife. “She did it in one leap. He didn’t see her coming.”
Chambers, 73, suffered bruised rib muscle and nerve damage from the attack and was treated at the hospital for his injuries and released.
Andrews Potter was arrested on suspicion of battery, cited and released, but Chambers’ family wants police to file hate crime charges. Celebrities apparently need to be on the lookout next time they want to express their thoughts on Trayvon.
