Queen Sugar is returning for a second season just in time to keep you cozy on long summer nights. The critically acclaimed series by famed director Ava DuVernay will be back on our television screens June 20th and 21st for a two-night premiere event.
The Louisiana-set series which is based on the beautifully written novel by Natalie Baszile follows the estranged Bordelon siblings who all come together after their father’s death to run their family’s decrepit sugar cane farm. Each sibling, of course, has their own personal issues that they must confront. The eldest, Charley Bordelon West (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) is the famed wife and manager of an NBA star living in LA until her life falls apart. Nova (Rutina Wesley), the middle sibling is a Black Lives Matter activist and journalist trying to keep her romantic relationship with a white cop under wraps. Finally, Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe), is searching for redemption after being released from prison while trying to raise his young son on his own. All three of the Bordelon are being held down by their loving, no-nonsense Aunt Vi (Tina Lifford).

If you recall on the season one finale, Ralph Angel discovered that his father revised his will and left the entire sugar can farm to him and not his sisters, Nova or Charley. We’re desperate to know how what revelation will change things.
Still, the premiere date isn’t even the most exciting aspect of the second season of Queen Sugar. As an advocate for women in film, Ava DuVernay has put together an all-woman directing team for the entire second season.
