The Opening Moments Of ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 5 Are Heart-Stopping

Orange Is The New Black stunned us all at the close of last season.

Poussey’s (Samira Wiley) death at the hands of a volatile inexperienced guard crushed viewers and caused the ladies of Litchfield to take matters into their own hands. Now, with the fifth season of the critically acclaimed Netflix drama dropping June 9, 2017, Netflix has just given us a snippet of what’s to come.

Details for the fifth season have been kept under lock and key thus far. However, at the SAG Awards red carpet last month, Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee told E! News, “Season 5 is done over the course of three days: you will watch 13 episodes, and find out what happens in the course of three days. So, it will be very detailed, very intense, and you better get ready.”

It looks like she wasn’t playing. Season five picks up right where season four left off. Daya (Dascha Polanco) is holding the gun, and a riot sparked by Poussey’s death quickly escalates when the inmates gain control of the prison. Once they get a taste of power, chaos erupts in the halls of Litchfield. Watch the first minute of OITNB season five for yourself below.

Many OITNB fans were horrified by the violent death of Poussey, a Black female character last season and some even said that they didn’t wish to continue watching the series. However, with this unprecedented new season that takes place over three days just around the corner, we doubt true fans will be able to look away.

OITNB is based on Piper Kerman’s memoir; Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, about her experiences at FCI Danbury, a minimum-security federal prison. This year’s returning cast include Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba, Laura Prepon, Kate Mulgrew, Danielle Brooks, Adrienne C. Moore, Jackie Cruz, Laverne Cox, Lea DeLaria and Natasha Lyonne.

You can expect to see the ladies of Litchfield for at least two more years after this. Netflix has renewed OITNB through season seven.
