The cast for the Bessie Smith biopic, Bessie, is rounding out quite nicely as Mike Epps, Tika Sumpter, Michael K. Williams and Charles Sutton have joined the ensemble.
The four actors will work alongside Queen Latifah, who will portray the legendary blues singer. Epps will play Smith’s love interest, Sumpter will act as a chorus girl in a singing troupe and Sutton will take on the role as Smith’s father, according to Huffington Post.
Mo’Nique and Khandi Alexander will also be a part of the project as the songstress’ mother and sister. No details on William’s character just yet.
Directed by Dee Rees, the HBO film will delve into the entertainer’s personal life and follow her career throughout the 1920s and ’30s as the “Empress of the Blues.”
