Lil Wayne isn’t the only young Black male artist spreading New Orleans love. Meet Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, the city’s other native son, who’s peddling a comparably smoking sound, “supafunkrock”— a fusion of funk, soul, rock and hip-hop genres.
As a tot, the musician, now 26, earned his nickname after an older brother saw him lugging a trombone twice his height. The heavy lifting paid off. Today, Andrews, along with his band, Orleans Avenue, are Grammy nominees, thanks to their album Backatown (2010). With a second release, For True, currently in tow, a killer performance of the national anthem at the 2012 NFL playoffs behind him and a crammed tour schedule, Andrews is on a mission to recharge NOLA’s feel-good glory days. We like the sound of that.
