On Sept. 15, the art collection of world-renowned Author and Poet Maya Angelou will go up for auction in New York City.
Swann Auction Galleries will offer the late poet’s work from her private collection — much of which has never been publicly exhibited.
According to Black Enterprise, many of the pieces were inspired by and gifted to Dr. Angelou.
Swann Auction Galleries’ Communications Director Alexandra Nelson, said Angelou’s collection includes some very significant pieces.
“Dr. Angelou had a real interest in African culture, and her collection reflects that,” Ms. Nelson said. “We’re the only auction house that focuses on this area so intensely. Because we have regular auctions, and because Dr. Angelou’s collection was of African American fine art it, was the right fit.”
One of Ms. Angelou’s pieces, Quilt of Life, is expected to set a new auction record. Pre-sale is estimated at $150,000 to $250,000. The piece was housed in Angelou’s Harlem home.
Kumasi Market, a painting by John Biggers, and Jonathan Green’s Wading in the Surf are among the pieces available for auction.
