Ta-Nehisi Coates is having a big year.
In addition to penning articles as a national correspondent for The Atlantic,Coates was recently nominated National Book Award, for his passionate letter to his son about race in America entitled, Between The World and Me. However, the author does not hide his fan fever when it comes to Marvel Comics.
And so his next gig makes total sense as he accepted the offer to write Marvel Comics Black Panther series. The project will give the sharp writer an opportunity to fuse his love for the comic world and his career trade.
Marvel’s interest in Coates peaked following an interview Coates conducted with Sana Amanat, a Marvel editor, where the two discussed diversity and inclusion in comic books.
After further dialogue, the offer became official.
The creation of the Black Panther series has circulated a lot of talk, as it is the first Black superhero and hails from the fictional African country, Wakanda.
The series, written by Coates and illustrated by Brian Stelfreeze, will discover the superhero “dealing with a violent uprising in his country set off by a superhuman terrorist group called the People,” explains the New York Times.
Created in 1966, the character will make its big-screen appearance in the upcoming film Captain America: Civil War in 2016, with a solo debut to follow in 2018.
Coates will begin his Marvel venture for the Black Panther series next spring.
