Scandal is ending after next season, but Shonda Rhimes has promised it’s going out with a bang.
ABC officially announced this week that the seventh season of Scandal will be its last. Olivia Pope and her Gladiators would be leaving Olivia Pope and Associates behind for new endeavors. However, knowing Rhimes, we are in for a whirlwind final season. In a statement to the press earlier this week, Rhimes broke her silence about the decision saying,
“Deciding how to end a show is easy. Deciding when to finish is quite simple when the end date is years away. But actually going through with it? Actually standing up to say, ‘This is it?’ Not so much. We are going to handle the end the way we like to handle the important things in our Scandal family: all together, white hats on, Gladiators running full speed over a cliff.”
When Scandal premiered back in 2012, it pulled in over 7 million viewers and its current sixth season is still garnering just over 5 million, which clearly means it doesn’t HAVE to be canceled. However, Rhimes has always said that she prefers to end a show before it fizzles out. Though Rhimes has said in the past that she know how the series will end, our past election season changed all that. In celebration of the 100th episode of Scandal, Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter,
“Any of the stories we planned now just feel like we’re copying what’s happening in reality, which is insane,” she said. “I used to know how it ended, and then Donald Trump was elected. We had a destination, and I don’t know if that’s our destination anymore.”
We don’t know exactly what direction Rhimes will be headed in for Scandal during season seven, but we do hope Olivia, and the Gladiators return to the season one formula of solving cases each episode.
