I know what you’re thinking. What would it look like if Jordan Peele, one half of the Key and Peele comedy duo, created a horror film? My guess is that it would be another parody of a popular horror film like how Scary Movie was to Scream, or how Haunted House was to Paranormal Activity. My expectations were totally dismantled when I pressed play on the new trailer for Get Out, a film written and directed by Peele himself.
Get Out is about a young Black man, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), who is preparing to meet his Caucasian girlfriend’s parents for a weekend getaway at the family’s estate. Looking to take their relationship to the next level, Chris is already questioning if his Blackness will serve as a shock to his girlfriend’s family. Once he arrives, he realizes that he has more to worry about than being in an interracial relationship. He soon finds out that something very strange is happening to every Black person that visits that town and he wants out.
Peele mentioned in an interview with Variety, “People know me for my work in comedy, but now I’ll get to focus on my passion for writing and directing horror films. Like comedy, horror has an ability to provoke thought and further the conversation on real social issues in a very powerful way,” Peele said. “Get Out takes on the task of exploring race in America, something that hasn’t really been done within the genre since Night of the Living Dead 47 years ago. It’s long overdue.”
The film also stars comedian Lil Rel Howery, Keith Stanfield of FX’s Atlanta series, and Betty Gabriel from The Purge: Election Year, just to name a few. Get Out is set to release February 24, 2017 and is being distributed by Universal Pictures. Check out the thrilling trailer below:
