Harlem native Jim Jones has been vocal about his role in keeping the sneaker culture alive in hip-hop. The emcee appeared on Sole Collector’s weekly sneaker talk show, Full Size Run, where he credited his hometown with making Nike Goadome boots cool during the early to mid-2000s.
“This is going to be very controversial, but the Nike boots with the Air bubble at the bottom, they started in Harlem. All facts,” the rapper told hosts Brendan Dunne, Matt Welty and Trinidad James.
Jones’ claims about Harlem’s on the popularity of the Nike boot goes against a theory that the trend began in New Jersey and the DMV area. Jones, though, jabs at D.C. native Wale, who released the single “Nike Boots” in 2007.
“Wale don’t want to have no sneaker conversation with me,” he said. “He get fly, but a lot of the sneakers he be wearing be ‘boo-boo.’ I don’t like them joints.”
The It’s Complicated emcee addressed Jones’ comments on social media.
He took to Twitter on Thursday to re-post a clip of the show and wrote, “Jim Jones wellin like s***.. yes WELLIN.”

He wrote, “So who started what???… #Wellin at an all time high,” as the caption for an Instagram post.
