It Looks Like Disney’s Live-Action ‘Mulan’ Won’t Have Any Songs In It & People Are Pissed

With an all-Asian cast and a female warrior at the center of the story, Disney’s forthcoming live-action Mulan was shaping up to slay the box office until the film’s director Niki Caro, dropped a massive bomb on us all.

Apparently, Mulan will go against Disney’s traditional formula and have ZERO musical interludes in the film. Part of the charm of the 1998 original animated feature was the soundtrack, which had hits like “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” and “Reflection.” If you recall, this was the film soundtrack that helped launch Christina Aguilera’s career. Caro told Moviefone, “From what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.”

Caro’s children aren’t the only ones who are horrified. The live-action version of Beauty of Beast dropped this past weekend, and fans praised the movie for including both original and new songs in the classic princess tale. Without the soundtrack as a foundation, Caro and Disney are going to have a lot more liberty to take Mulan‘s narrative in a new direction. Quite frankly, that could either be good or bad.

In her interview, Caro went on to describe the film as a “muscular piece of girly martial arts extravaganza.” Though we aren’t quite sure what this means, hopefully, it will be dope. However, fans of the original Mulan are not having it. They want their music, and they’ve taken to social media to express their contempt over its absence. According to Mulan fans, without the music, the live-action version should just be canceled.

The script for the live-action Mulan is currently being written by Jurassic World‘s Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver and casting is well underway in China. Despite the lack of music, it’s fantastic to see a female director at the helm of such a massive Disney project; we just hope she calls Eddie Murphy up to reprise his role as Mushu the dragon because let’s be real, there is no Mulan without him.
