Nearly everyone has seen or heard about the 9-year-old “Kid President’s” pep talks, whose videos have amassed over 12 million views on YouTube, and even caught the eye of President Barack Obama. And while his words of encouragement aim to be a source of inspiration, the story of the boy behind the suit and tie – Robby Novak – is all the more inspiring.
CBS News discovered that Robby has osteogenesis imperfecta which makes the bones very brittle. At not even 10 years old, he has had more than 70 broken bones and 13 surgeries. While that would typically instill fear in some, Robby insists it doesn’t worry him.
“I don’t worry about – like, that’s my point!” he says. “I’m trying not to worry about it. Like, I want everybody to know I’m not that kid who breaks a lot. Like, I’m just a kid who wants to have fun.”
With more wisdom in his body that some two or three times his age, Robby tells CBS that his favorite part of making the videos is dancing and that it’s “amazing” to see himself in them.
