HIDDEN FIGURES
Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe star in the untold story of three extraordinary and brilliant African-American women working for NASA. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, who are all members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, proved themselves through adversity to become the brains behind the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. The film is based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s book Hidden Figures: The Story of the African American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race and co-produced by Pharrell Williams.
FENCES
Denzel Washington and Viola Davis deliver a powerful performance in Fences, a film adapted from a screenplay by the infamous playwright August Wilson. The film tackles the issues of fatherhood, manhood and self-worth as Troy Maxson’s story is unveiled. Maxson (played by Washington) had hopes of becoming a major league baseball player but was too old by the time the MLB decided to integrate Black players. Instead, he lived his life as a sanitation worker and took care of his family until he could no longer withstand temptation with another woman and quickly saw his stable life crumble before his eyes. This Pulitzer Prize-winning screenplay is produced and directed by Denzel Washington.
