The 72nd Annual Golden Globe awards took place Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and it was indeed a festive evening with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on comedic hosting duties for the third time.
The highlight for us here at the JET was the reigning moment Prince awarded Chi-town emcee and actor, Common along with R&B crooner, John Legend with the Golden Globe for “Best Original Song” for their collaborative track “Glory.” The inspirational track is featured in the hot ticket film of the year, “Selma.” (We hope you’ve seen the movie by now or plan to this week.)
Three incredibly gifted artists on the stage…at the Golden Globes…at the same time being acknowledged for a track that is more than just a song, but homage to a watershed moment (and movement) in our history.
Common’s speech as he accepted his first Golden Globe was moving and spoke volumes to every person watching on television and I can imagine struck even harder for those in the moment experiencing the speech right there with him:
“I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand, but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty. Selma has awakened my humanity.”
