Phylicia Rashad Joins the Cast of ‘Empire’

Season three of Fox’s hit show Empire is almost here, and it’s about to get even better. In addition to Cookie and Lucious Lyon stirring up the drama, New York’s most famous music family is about to run into one powerful foe.

Acting legend Phylicia Rashad will join the cast when Empire returns in September. Rashad, who came to fame as Claire Huxtable on the Cosby Show, will play Diana Dubois, the matriarch of one of New York’s most powerful families. She’s also the mother of Angelo Dubois (played by Taye Diggs), an aspiring politician. When Angelo develops a sweet tooth and wants a piece of Cookie, his mother isn’t too pleased. According to a press release sent to JET, “Diana’s interactions with Cookie, Lucious and the rest of the Lyon clan will lay bare the stark class divides that can exist, even within the Black community.”

Sounds juicy.

Rashad isn’t the only newcomer to EmpireMariah Carey will also be joining the cast in a guest starring role. Carey will play a singer named Kitty who makes a hit with Jamal Lyon, and we’re sure her powerful vocals will be on display. Xzibit, Kid Cudi, French Montana, and Birdman will also make appearances on the upcoming season of the show.

Check out a teaser.
