Tamar Braxton is grooving her way toward being quite the contender in the Season 21 Dancing with the Stars competition. Braxton earned a 24 out of 30 for the first night of competition this week, a three way tie with Carlos and Alexa PenaVega.
It was the start of a “Hometown Glory” event for the ABC show during which the stars chose music that reminded them of their hometowns.
Dancing to “We Are Family,” Braxton impressed viewers and the judges with her moves yet again. Every time the Grammy-nominated singer hits the dance floor you can tell she’s a performer.
She lights up the room with every step—when she’s on her own, but the judges suggested that her mystical moves change for the worse when she connects with her reigning champion partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy.
“When you’re on your own you’re a show stopper, but when you’re with Val you kind of lose that,” said Judge Carrie Ann Inaba.
Still, looks like the Braxton sis could be moving toward a mirror ball.
Sadly, Chaka Khan doesn’t share Braxton’s fortune.
Though the Queen of Funk did improve from last week’s premiere, earning 15 out of 30, she still struggled with remembering her choreography.
Inaba had called her out on her forgetfulness last week and made the same notes Monday night.
“I want to see you when you don’t forget the choreography,” she said. “I know there’s something magnificent there.”
“Oh there is,” Khan said.
Unfortunately we’ll never know what that looks like, at least not on DWTS.
Khan was the first celeb eliminated of the 10 week competition.
“I enjoyed this—I feel like I did [Keo] such a disservice, he is by far one of the best dancers I’ve ever seen,” Khan said.
Bindi Irwin maintains her status at the top of the leaderboard with a 25 out of 30, but the stars had to learn two different dances for the week and night two kicks off Tuesday with another elimination to follow the performances.
DWTS airs on ABC at 9/8c.
