Black Stars Shined Bright at the Met Gala

Although there’s an apparent lack of diversity in the fashion world, you couldn’t tell by looking at the guest list for the Met Gala these past few years, where celebrities like Rihanna, Willow and Jaden Smith, and Olivier Rousteing (the Black creative director of Balmain) rub elbows with fashion industry heavyweights and set trends for all of Hollywood.

Monday night was no different. Although we didn’t get a Rihanna sighting this year (her touring schedule prevented her from attending), we still were able to watch and admire other Black celebs who helped make the event shine.

Keep scrolling to see our top 5 best dressed.

Beyoncé

Beyoncé showed up to the gala sans Jay-Z, wearing an embellished latex gown and super straight locks, which gave her the look and feel of a Barbie doll. Bey’s body has never looked better, either, and her Givenchy dress was one of the most unique at the event.

Kerry Washington

It’s no surprise that Kerry Washington was glowing at this year’s gala. She walked the red carpet after announcing she’s expecting her second child with her husband Nnamdi Asomugha. Kerry wore a Marc Jacobs gown accessorized with lace gloves and magenta highlights. Her smokey eye was on point too, and her peach cheeks and nude, shiny lip finished off the look.

Idris Elba

Idris stunted on the younger men in attendance in a classic Tom Ford tuxedo. The epitome of a class act, the suit was tailored to perfection, befitting of a certain British spy. Fella’s take note, this is how you do it.

Jourdan Dunn

Jourdan Dunn was nothing short of a rock star in a metallic Balmain dress that fit her like a glove. Although other celebrities were able to pull off the gray-haired look, most notably Ciara, Jourdan’s picture-perfect bob and flawless make-up definitely gave her an edge over the other girls in gray.

KimYe

Kanye and Kim Kardashian West wore complementary outfits, which adhered to the theme “Manus x Machina: fashion in the Age of Technology.” It’s no surprise the couple wore Balmain, as their love of Creative Director Olivier Rousteing runs deep. What was a surprise were Yeezy’s ice blue contacts, which under normal circumstances I’d absolutely hate, but due to the theme, he gets a pass. Although some felt West’s jeans made him appear underdressed, any true fashionista knows dressing down at a black tie affair is nothing short of a fashion statement. On the other hand, Mrs. West looked very much like a femmebot with crazy curves in her Balmain gown.

So there you have it, our top five looks from the 2016 Met gala.

These celebs weren’t the only ones to shine last night, though. Stars Zendaya, Ciara, Willow and Jaden Smith, Nas, The Weeknd, and quite a few others all looked phenomenal.
