As the tagline reads, Mary Jane Paul is “beautifully flawed” and come season four of BET’s Being Mary Jane, Will Packer and Erica Shelton Kodish will take over the duties of continuing her journey and rolling out her story.
Packer, who is on a steady resumé climb, has signed on as an executive producer of the drama. Kodish (The Good Wife) joins him while also being tapped as the showrunner.
“Will’s a master producer and storyteller and Erica is a dynamic writer whose experience in developing complex, multi-dimensional women makes her the ideal scribe to continue Mary Jane’s journey,” Stephen Hill, President of Programming at BET Networks told Deadline.
As for creator of the show Mara Brock Akil and husband Salim, who served as a director and executive producer, the two will begin their new partnership with Warner Bros. TV this month.
While many have been concerned about the exit of the Akils, Being Mary Jane’s star, Gabrielle Union, is also a producer on the show.
So, between Packer’s work history combined with Union and Kodish’s lengthy experience, the #BlackGirlMagic should still be in tact. Also, though their focus will be heavily on their new Warner Bros. projects, the Akils will stay on as executive producers of the show.
Season 4 is slated to begin shooting in Atlanta later this year. Who’s ready for more Mary Jane–flaws and all?!
