Queen Ava DuVernay scored another win. Her documentary film, The 13th, has been pegged as the opening film of the 54th Annual New York Film Festival.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center made the announcement this morning.
Chronicling the history of racial inequality in the United States, The 13th examines how our country has produced the highest rate of incarceration in the world, with the majority of those in prisons and jails being African American.
“This film was made as an answer to my own questions about how and why we regard some of our citizens as innately criminal and how and why good people allow this injustice to happen generation after generation,” DuVernay stated in a press release sent to JET.
The documentary will debut on Netflix, and will be the first-ever nonfiction work to open the prestigious festival.
DuVernay’s film will also have a limited theatrical run beginning October 7.
