The ’90s sparked the beginning and end of a “golden era” that brought excitement, thought, and loads of entertainment to our radio speakers and TV screens.
The ’90s were cool, creative, and comedic with a smart edge. With shows ranging from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, where comedy was the glue but issues of absentee fathers, distant mothers, and class were also discussed, to four women navigating careers, romance and friendship on Living Single, there was a wide range of content and memorable moments.
On the film side, Black folks were directing and starring in films that told stories of our experience from historical perspectives to the reality of life in the ‘hood.
And the music! The New Jack Swing era, curated by Teddy Riley, made its impact with sounds that bumped heavy in the club scene; the sultry Toni Braxton released hits; Quincy Jones curated some of the most timeless records and introduced us to Canadian songstress, Tamia; and Puff Daddy, along with his Bad Boy clique, were everywhere.
