Ten years later, and the mystery of who murdered DJ Jam Master Jay of the iconic rap group Run DMC remains unsolved. Jay, whose real name was Jason Mizell, was fatally shot on Oct. 30, 2002 by an unknown gunman inside of his recording studio.
Police recently told the New York Daily News that lack of cooperation from witnesses has stalled the process in identifying the gunman and his accomplice. While they do have leads, many witnesses have either recanted their stories or cannot provide a name.
“I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since Jay’s death,” Mizell’s partner Darryl “DMC” McDaniels told the Daily News. “But spiritually, he’s always with me. His presence is felt as strongly today as it was the night he passed away.”
Police are offering a $60,000 reward for any tips that could lead to a conviction.
Mizell, McDaniels and Joe “Run” Simmons formed the multi-platinum group in 1981 and scored hits such as “It’s Tricky,” “My Adidas,” and the Aerosmith collaboration “Walk This Way.”
