Date Knight: Does Infidelity Belong on Social Media?

As the staff’s resident relationship guru — who’s carved out a space on the web with an award-winning site called Naked With Socks On — I’ve been tapped by JET’s EIC to offer up dating advice and perspective for our readers. Five days out of the week I’m slaving behind a desk as JET’s Managing Editor, so I look forward to exploring the sights and sounds of Chicago with my wife as part of our weekly outings. I am Anslem Samuel Rocque and this is Date Knight.

Rob Kardashian and girlfriend Rita Ora have called it quits. Based on the longevity—or lack thereof—of most celebrity relationships, the news doesn’t come as much of a surprise. To be honest, I didn’t even know they were an item, but that’s a topic for another blog. What’s shocking is how their love affair unraveled.

Earlier this week, Rob K went on a Twitter tirade calling out his freshly-minted ex for infidelity. Not just with one man, but a number hovering past the double-digit mark.

“She cheated on me with nearly 20 dudes while we were together,” he tweeted. “I wonder how many she will sleep with now that we [sic] apart?”

The accusation was followed up with: “How can a woman who is so busy trying to start her own career have time to be with so many dudes all while in a relationship?!”

Rob K later deleted the messages, but not before leaving one final comment on the situation online: “I’m actually disgusted a woman could give her body to more than 20 dudes in less than a year’s time while trying to start a career.”

The whole debacle became a trending topic that had people picking sides. While I have no clue about the validity of Rob’s claims about Rita Ora’s behavior, I do have an opinion on his actions. A major part of maintaining an intimate relationship is the actual intimacy. Sure, Rita (allegedly) broke that vow, Rob crossed the ethical line as well by making the situation public—despite deleting the tweets later.

I’m from the school of thought that people’s private lives should remain as such. Whether or not Rita slept with 1 man or 20, that’s a matter for Rob and Rita to discuss and deal with. While I can understand Rob feeling hurt and betrayed if true, taking to social media to vent his frustrations to his 3.8+ million followers is not advisable. Now, his hurt is and embarrassment is multiplied by that 3.8+ million. And, what was once a private matter became fodder for blogs (this one included).

Maybe he was looking for pity. Perhaps he was just angry in the moment. Or, there’s a possibility his account was actually “hacked.” Whatever the case, the damage is done on both sides of the coin: Rita Ora’s labeled as a “loose” woman, and Rob K’s depicted as a “simp” who can’t satisfy his woman. Love is a battlefield and there are no winners or losers in a breakup, especially when you blast the intimate details of your relationship online.

Do you think Rob Kardashian was wrong for tweeting about Rita Ora’s alleged infidelity? Or, does someone who’s cheated on have every right to drag their unfaithful ex’s name through the mid?
