The Creamy Nude Lipsticks That Don’t Make Women of Color Look Washed Out

It’s about time.

There is nothing worse than being disappointed by a nude lipstick color. It looks great in the tube, you try it on, and once it’s on your lips, you look washed out. Most of the nude lipsticks on the market at the moment do not match women of color. They’re either too pink or too dark to wear in the daytime. Also, the ones that do match tend to have a matte finish which requires extra preparation and upkeep throughout the day. The lack of options makes it impossible to find a comfortable no makeup look or a simple lip routine that doesn’t include a lip liner and two colors of lipsticks.

The brand tested by Lauren Ash, fitness blogger and founder of Black Girl in Om, for the Shorty Awards.

Mented Cosmetics, a lipstick brand started by two Harvard graduates, is the new indie brand to have in your makeup bag. KJ Miller and Amanda E. Johnson, the black women behind the brand, have created nude colors they can use on themselves and their friends. The lipsticks come in six shades that range from a light pink a to chocolate brown. The straightforward lipstick names include Nude Lala, Pretty in Pink, Mented #5, Foxy Brown, Dope Taupe, and Dark Night. The line is also vegan, paraben free, non-toxic, cruelty-free, and made in America. Each of the lipstick tubes is 16.50 from mentedcosmetics.com. Here is a video of the actress, Adrienne White, trying the lip shades:
