Have you ever wondered what all the hype is about professional facials?

Seriously, with all of the skincare products on the market, why can’t you just buy what’s on sale and play aesthetician for the day? Welp, here’s the deal: Being a woman of color, some of your skincare concerns like, acne scarring, sun spots or dullness need very special care, and I guarantee you won’t achieve the same benefits of a professional beauty practitioner. Not to mention, the risks of damaging your pretty face are suggestively higher. My advice? Step away from the DIY chemical peel, but down the Comedone extractor and book an appointment at your local spa.

I have oily skin, so it’s always been an ongoing battle for me to find the perfect balance, and transitioning my skin from Old Man winter’s havoc has been especially tough. I visited the spa at the Peninsula Chicago for a little skincare “R&R” – and was pleasantly surprised that the aesthetician assessed my skin’s condition with minimal conversation. There was congestion in my T-zone, which explained the tiny blackheads that I couldn’t get rid of, and the thirst level on my cheeks, y’all? It was so real. My service included intense exfoliation, extractions (done properly) and a balancing mask that shocked my skin back to reality. Some facial packages include a scalp massage while your mask penetrates, which for me, was sort of a weird experience. It’s just that I’d rather reserve the extra sexy time for Denzel, Idris, Morris, Shamar, or…okay. You get the point.

And then the whole Buckwheat bed hair thing was not a good look afterward, but hey, that’s just me.

Now, if one of your reservations about having a professional facial done is cost, you don’t have to break the bank to indulge. You can find $50 treatments throughout the country during Spa Week April 21 – 27, and guess what? You’re not limited to facials – score! I always like to check out the ratings on Yelp before I book an appointment with an unfamiliar spa, or of course, you can always ask me! Most services are customizable to fit your unique skincare concern, which is the bomb.com, because not all skincare is created equally.

Are you new to the facial game, or are you a fanatic? What advice would you offer to the newbies? Let’s talk about it during our Beauty School Twitter Chat today from 2 – 2:30 p.m. CST! Check the deets:
