“Your eyebrows are not on fleek; they look like they were sponsored by black sharpie.”
Adrienne Bailon, one of the hosts of the daytime show, The Real, bashed women with bad makeup through slam poetry this Friday. The host dedicated the poem to women that don’t know how to do their makeup and started the poem with the line, “Ma’am, why are you so sad? Is it because your makeup looks so bad?”.
As funny as the video started off, it quickly turned into feeling cringeworthy. As a person in the public eye, Bailon knows best of all how difficult it can be to handle society’s beauty standards. On her own Instagram, she receives countless comments from haters telling her things like, “Girl…you lied. Makeup cannot change your face that much. You had your lips, nose, and cheeks done. And age doesn’t change a face that much either so stop lying.” It is impossible to feel comfortable as a woman already, but hearing Bailon promoting the public shaming of women is ultimately discouraging.
We know it was all in good fun, and Bailon likely didn’t think out whether it was the best way to utilize the platform of the Emmy-nominated daytime show, but it does get tiring that the appearance of women is always at the buds of the joke.
