One police constable couldn’t “get the London look” that her superiors wanted.
The London Metropolitan Police Department, Britain’s largest force, is facing a compensation claim from a woman who was allegedly “singled out and targeted” for almost a year.
Carol Howard, 35, is a firearms officer in the Diplomatic Protection Group for the Met and claims she was directly victimized by the Met. She was one of a few women, and one of even fewer Black women in her unit.
A tribunal judgement found that the Met was being extremely discriminatory toward Howard because of her gender and race between January-October 2012.
“My client was subjected to discriminatory treatment because she is Black and because she is a woman,” said Howard’s lawyer Kiran Daurka.
Many of Howard’s complaints, including being wrongly questioned on her honesty, were “well-founded,” the Huffington Post reports.
“It is of concern that such issues are still prevalent in the Metropolitan Police Service,” said Metropolitan Police Federation chairman John Tully.
The tribunal concluded that Howard’s acting superior was indeed targeting her after forming a negative view of her very early.
