Studies Show Big Promise for HIV Prevention Drug

Exciting research suggests that a shot every one to three months may someday give an alternative to the daily pills that some people take now to cut their risk of getting HIV. The experimental drug has only been tested for prevention in monkeys, but it completely protected them from infection in two studies reported at an AIDS conference on Tuesday.

Senate Blocks Obama’s Pick for Civil Rights Post

President Barack Obama’s choice to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division was blocked by bipartisan Senate opposition Wednesday in an emotional postscript to the long-ago murder of a Philadelphia policeman and the legal help his killer received. The vote against advancing Debo Adegbile toward confirmation was 47-52, shy of the majority needed under new procedures Democrats put in place late last year to overcome Republican stalling tactics.

First lady Michelle Obama is set to present Women of Soul, the latest event in the “In Performance at the White House” series Thursday night. The concert will celebrate some of the most dynamic voices of today and yesterday, including performances from Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Jill Scott, Janelle Monáe and the winner ofThe Voice Season 5, Tessanne Chin.

HBO Recruits Rappers for “Game of Thrones” Mixtape

To prepare viewers for the season 4 premiere of Game of Thrones, HBO is teaming up with an array of urban artists for Catch The Throne, a mixtape based around the series. Catch the Throne will feature tracks from 10 artists including Common, Wale and Big Boi, who’s a self-proclaimed fan of the series.
