Ice Cube just confirmed the final Friday sequel, and we’re not exactly jumping for joy.
In 1995, Ice Cube proved he was way more than just a rapper and actor when his film Friday was thrust on the big screen, confirming its place in cinema history. Directed by F. Gary Gray (who currently holds the record as the first Black director to have a billion dollar film) and from Ice Cube’s own screenplay the film gave us the gem “Bye Felicia” and so much more.
Co-written by DJ Pooh, Friday follows 16 hours in the lives of unemployed Craig Jones (Cube) and Smokey (Chris Tucker), who must pay a drug dealer $200 by 10:00 p.m. that night. In the middle of the hood-homeboy genre that boasted much darker films like Boyz N the Hood, Menace II Society and Juice, Friday gave us all some much needed comedic relief.
Its sequels, 2000’s Next Friday and 2002’s Friday After Next were hilarious in their own right, but after fifteen years, we’re not sure why we need another Friday film. However, our opinion doesn’t matter because the 47-year old mogul just announced that in 2018 we will be getting the fourth and final film of the franchise, Last Friday.
According to The Jasmine Brand, Cube confirmed the last movie by saying, “We’re working on one right now. We’re gonna call it Last Friday.” No other deets have been released at this time. Following the announcement of Baby Boy 2, we really hope this film is well done. It should definitely be more of a Best Man Holiday than a Barbershop: The Next Cut.
