As if retired New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter isn’t already legendary enough, he’s now going to be a baseball immortal.
His number (2) is set to be retired on May 14 by the team, making him the 22nd player in Yankees history to carry the honor. He follows Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams whose jerseys were retired last season.
Jeter played his entire 20-year baseball career with the Yankees, has five World Series championship rings and has made 14 All-Star Game appearances. He is the team’s sixth in career hits with 3,465 and also has records for games played (2,747), at-bats (11,195), doubles (544) and stolen bases (358).
He played his final game in 2014, to a rousing ovation from Yankees fans all over the world as his walk off single beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-5.
