Rihanna has won a case against the fashion retailer Topshop for using her image on its T-shirts without permission.
The “We Found Love” singer initially sued the company back in July 2013 and won, but Topshop lawyers appealed the judge’s decision last November.
However, the courts once again sided with the pop star, ruling that the use of her picture without authorization is considered “passing off;” it reels in some customers with the false assumption that Rihanna was an endorser.
The judge also stated that the top was damaging to the 25-year-old’s “goodwill” and represented a loss of control over her reputation in the “fashion sphere.”
Now, Topshop must pay a whopping $5 million in addition to Rih Rih’s legal fees. Wowzers!
This is the first victory of its kind as celebrities in the UK generally have no control over the use of their photos. Leave it up to the Rihanna navy to come back swinging.
